Long Day’s Journey into Night by Eugene O’Neill

Harold Bloom in his introduction to the Yale edition of the play wrote the following:  No dramatist to this day … has matched O’Neill in depicting the nightmare realities that can afflict American family life, indeed family life in the twentieth century Western world.”

Like Shakespeare and the Greek playwrights, O’Neill was able to make his play universal.  He wrote this masterpiece with just four main characters whose action takes place in a single day, from morning to midnight.  In this short time, we come to know, understand, and sympathize with this family.
