Monsters and Heroes:  Grendel and Beowulf 

Tales of heroes and monsters depict the ongoing battle between good and evil.  The class will read two works, the Anglo-Saxon poem “Beowulf” and John Gardner’s “Grendel,” a modern retelling of these same events, to explore the nature of monsters, changes in the definition and depiction of good and evil, and to investigate the boundaries between human and ‘other.’

Instructor:  Nancy Dickson, PhD, has taught English, Women’s Studies, and Mythology for several universities and for many continuing education programs.

This class meets Mondays, 10 am to Noon, September 25-October 23.

Location:  St. Peter’s Church, Room 201.
