The Comedies of George Bernard Shaw
Course Description: This course will study five of Shaw’s most popular comedies (“Candida”, “Pygmalion”, Major Barbara”, Heartbreak House”, and “Man and Superman”.) These are among the many Shaw plays that collectively earned the most money in the history of British drama while redefining the nature of comedy itself.
Instructor: Prof. Norman Wesley’s career spans fifty years of teaching English, American, and world literature as well as grammar and linguistics at American colleges and universities and briefly at Cambridge University in England. He is now a retired [emeritus] professor from The State University of New York and lives in Fernandina Beach.
Schedule: 8 sessions. Thursday, September 29 through November 17, 11:30-1:00.
Location: Upstairs conference room at Scott & Sons Jewelry, 9900 Amelia Island Parkway, Fernandina Beach. Please park away from the front door to the store.
Fee: $50 per person
Materials: Students will need to purchase the five George Bernard Shaw comedies, and Moliere’s “The Misanthrope.” Individual copies of the plays are available through Amazon (some on Kindle), or through your local bookstore.
