Course Description: In this course we will study the best-known poems of the two most influential poets of the early Seventeenth Century, a time when the scientific method is introduced and earlier beliefs are challenged, in short, when the modern world begins to take shape. The poems will be studied both for their own sakes and for what their manners of expression tell us about the differing views of the world of the two poets and of their followers: the metaphysical poets led by Donne and the neo-classical poets who called themselves The Sons of Ben.
