Course Description: Using real wood block print examples, students will learn about the social and cultural significance of religious wood block prints in Japan, Korea, China, and Vietnam. Next, students will use original wood blocks from the instructor’s personal collection to print a variety of religious talismans. The course will be supplemented by videos on this tradition, as well as descriptions of the different types of religious prints.
Instructor: Jim Kemp has spent many years visiting and traveling in East Asia. He has lived in Vietnam and studied Chinese in Taiwan. He has an M.A. in East Asian Studies from FSU and has taught courses on Asian society, culture, and religion at FSCJ for ten years.
Schedule: 5 sessions. Thursdays from September 28 to October 26; 1:00-3:00PM.
